My favourite exercise class that has built into a community. Acro let's me be strong and silly, a perfectionist while improvising. I never thought I'd be able to do the poses, flips and moves that I do, but with this incredibly skilled and supportive community literally anything is possible. Highly, highly recommend people come and try it out. You will be amazed and delighted with what you can accomplish and how much dang fun you have along the way.

Do I Need to Be Flexible for Acro Yoga?

Not at all. Flexibility is not required to start our classes in Vancouver. Our classes are designed to help you build mobility naturally through consistent practice, movement, and play.

Do I Need to Be Strong?

Nope. All you need is an open mind and a willingness to try. Handstand skills build strength over time. Many movements rely more on technique, balance, and partner communication than raw strength, making it accessible for beginners.

Common Handstand Progressions

Handstands are usually learned through progressions rather than jumping straight into balancing freely in the middle of the room. At Acro Umbrella, classes focus on building strength, mobility, body awareness, and confidence step by step.

Devon and Heidi doing handstands in Vancouver

Wrist and Shoulder Preparation: Most beginners start with wrist conditioning, shoulder mobility, and body alignment drills to prepare the body for weight-bearing upside down.

Wall Holds: Wall-supported handstands help students learn stacking, overhead positioning, and body tension in a more stable environment. Nose-to-wall drills are commonly used to improve alignment and control.

Frog Stands and Weight Shifting: Balance drills such as frog stands help students understand how to shift weight into the hands and build confidence balancing upside down.

Kick-Ups and Bail Practice: Students gradually learn controlled entries into handstands while also practicing how to safely come down or cartwheel out.

Freestanding Balance: As strength and awareness improve, students work toward balancing away from the wall using line drills, balance corrections, and controlled breathing.
